If you miss the deadline, Microsoft’s servers will not authenticate the free upgrade and you will be asked to pay. Windows 10 has a cloud-based authentication system, so you must install the upgrade before 29 July 2016. However, the download will soon be out of date, so that is not a long-term solution. You can download Windows 10 and keep it on a DVD or USB stick, which is handy if you need to upgrade several PCs. Windows 10 is “Windows as a Service” and it is frequently updated from the cloud.
